Technology x Innequalities

What Harlan Mills predicted did not become a reality , the growth of technology knowledge has not been enough to reduce the level of inequalities in the World, as Thomas Piketty revealed later; What are we going to do to change this?

“Mankind, under the grace of God, hungers for spiritual peace, esthetics, achievements, family security, justice, and liberty, none directly satisfied by industrial productivity, but productivity allows the share of the plentiful harder than fighting over scarcity; it provides time for spiritual, esthetic and family matters. It allows society to delegate special skills to institutions of religion, justice and the preservation of liberty.” Harlan Mills, from the preface of the book Object Oriented Design -1991

Versus

“….Modern economic growth and the diffusion of knowledge have made it possible to avoid the Marxist apocalypse of capital but have not modified the deep structure of capital and inequality—-or in any case not as much might have imagined in the optimistic decades following World War II. When the rate of return on capital exceeds the rate of growth of output and income, as it did in the nineteenth century and seems quite likely to do again in the twenty-first, capitalism automatically generates arbitrary and unsustainable inequalities that radically undermine the meritocratic values on which democratic societies are based.” Thomas Piketty – from the book Capital in the Twenty First Century – 2010
